In this article you’ll learn how to sell internationally on Shopify. As your business grows, something else is very likely to happen. You want to expand geographically, or you want to sell in other countries, or put simply, going global. Now the good news is there is really very little to stop you doing that.
I mean, of course your store is on the Internet, so it’s already available worldwide. But to give it more of a global feel, you might want to consider being able to show your products in different currencies.
Multiple Currencies
Now, you probably remember in my previous post when we set up your store currency, I encouraged you to put it in as US dollars because that is the most recognized global currency, which gets you off to a very good start.
But perhaps you might be thinking, if I want to sell in Europe, I really would like my products to appear in euros, and if I want to sell in Australia, it would be great if they were showing in Australian dollars etc. So how could you do that?
How could you show your products in the currency that’s relevant to the country where your potential customer is living? Well, of course it’s no surprise it can all be done with an app, and a currency converter app for that matter. There are many of them. But once again, the one that I’ve used in the past which I can recommend to you is Best Currency Converter.
The number of reviews this app has is well over 9000 with a 4.7 star. So, you know, this is a good app. Now, go learn more about the app.
So, if you want to be able to show specific currencies in specific countries, this app can handle that for you.
Multiple Languages
Now, the other question that pops up a lot once you start thinking about a global store is the possibility of displaying it in different languages. Now, of course, there’s an app for that as well. This one’s called Translate Your Store – Weglot. To be honest, I haven’t used this app before, but I do see it popping up a lot. It’s very well reviewed now.
Whereas displaying your store in different currencies is a pretty straightforward process, displaying your store in different languages needs a bit more thought because, while I’m sure this app does a great job of allowing you to input multiple languages for your store, that really is only the beginning. Why would I say that?
Well, let’s imagine that you translate your store into Spanish. Now you have both English and Spanish available on your store. Now what you’ve done there is you set an expectation, and that expectation is that all of your future communication could be in Spanish. That means all of the emails that go out, and all of the customer service that you’re going to provide, should also be in Spanish as well.
Now, you could say that that’s not essential. But imagine a customer who speaks Spanish comes to your site, they go on, they order their products, and then they start getting emails and all kinds of other good stuff in a language that they really don’t understand. It’s not going to be a great customer experience.
That’s why I say the simple translation of your site, because it is relatively simple, is kind of just the beginning. You need to think about the whole process from A to Z before you really start looking into translating your store.
But if you really sense an opportunity and you feel like you can massively expand your sales to the Spanish speaking market, for example, by translating the site into Spanish, going that extra mile might be well worth the effort. I hope you that now you’ve read this far you now understand how to sell internationally on Shopify.
